"Only You"
Tagline: A love story written in the stars.
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Italian scenery, whirlwind trip to Europe with your best friend, and Robert Downey Jr. What more could I want? The main character, an engaged Faith (played by Marisa Tomei), got the name of her soul mate (Damon Bradley) from a fortune teller and an Ouija board when she was 12 years old. Flash forward to her twenties and she is happy, but not engaged to Damon Bradley. Then, she receives a phone call from a Damon Bradley on his way to Europe, an old friend of her fiancĂ©’s, and the next thing we know is Faith is on a direct flight to Venice. How much more appropriate is Faith’s name considering the destiny twisted into this movie’s plotline? Her witty friend and sister-in-law, Kate (played by Bonnie Hunt), accompanies her on the trip and begins to fall for an Italian man of her own. Then, Faith meets Damon (Robert Downey Jr.) and thinks she has met her other half. But is the meeting just a bit too coincidental?
I love this movie with the beautiful scenery. When I travel to Europe, I want to visit Italy and all the shooting locations from this film. I admire the deep hope of the destiny-struck character of Faith and identify with her belief that there is one person out there for each of us. I love the impulse decisions she makes with Kate grumbling along the way, although one can tell Kate is also enjoying herself. The immediate connection between Tomei and Downey is clear and evidence of their talented acting abilities to create an immediate spark on the screen. It always seems everything is more romantic in Italy for some reason as well, which adds to the movie’s appeal for me.
